Fracture
A fracture is a broken bone. If the broken bone tears the skin, it is called a open or a compound fracture.
Causes:
Pressure on the bone beyond what it can withstand, for example in falls, accidents; it results in its breaking or spitting.
Symptoms:
- You can feel a bone or joint out of place.
- Pain
- Swelling
- Unwillingness or inability to move a limb
How you can help:
- Keep the person calm and still.
- If the skin is broken, do not touch it. It may cause infection. Just cover it with a clean cloth.
- Immobilize the broken bone with the help of a support or a sling in the position it is. Do not attempt to change the position unless immobilized or there is severe bleeding.
- Apply ice pack to prevent swelling or pain.
Note:
- Do not move the person if his hip, his head, or his spine looks like injured.
- Do not give anything to the person by mouth.
- Call for immediate help.
