Hemophilia
A condition in which the blood fails to clot.
Cause:
It is inherited. However in very rare cases it can be acquired. The acquired hemophilia generally resolves with appropriate treatment.
Treatment:
No cure exists at the moment. The only way to treat is by replacing the factor that is absent and causes the blood to clot. The following methods are available:
- Whole blood transfusion
- Plasma transfusion
- Cryoprecipitate
- Factor concentrates
Notes:
- Generally males are seen to suffer hemophilia. Rarely though you see it in women.
- Bleeding is generally internal and can be fatal.
- Even bruises on the neck or head can be dangerous.
- Sports and physical activity is very good for hemophilic patients. It reduces the chances of internal damage.
