Leukemia

Cancer of the white blood cells (leukocytes). It results in the impaired formation of the other types of cells.

Types:

• Acute: rapidly developing
• Chronic: slow developing

Symptoms:

• Episodes of fever
• Anemia
• Nose bleeds
• Joint pains
• Swollen lymph nodes
• Abnormally tired feeling

Diagnosis:

• Complete blood count (TBC)
• Bone marrow biopsy
• Lumbar puncture
• Treatment:
• Chemotherapy
• Bone marrow transplant

Notes:

Leukemia is a curable disease but the time required and the intensity of chemotherapy may vary. Also the amount of side-effects to bear with differs from people to people.
