Leukemia
Cancer of the white blood cells (leukocytes). It results in the impaired formation of the other types of cells.
Types:
- Acute: rapidly developing
- Chronic: slow developing
Symptoms:
- Episodes of fever
- Anemia
- Nose bleeds
- Joint pains
- Swollen lymph nodes
- Abnormally tired feeling
Diagnosis:
- Complete blood count (TBC)
- Bone marrow biopsy
- Lumbar puncture
- Treatment:
- Chemotherapy
- Bone marrow transplant
Notes:
Leukemia is a curable disease but the time required and the intensity of chemotherapy may vary. Also the amount of side-effects to bear with differs from people to people.
