Muscle atrophy

It is the loss of muscle tissue due to disease or inadequate use.

Causes:

  • Due to aging
  • Stroke
  • Spinal chord injury
  • Arthritis
  • Diabetes
  • Burns

Prevention:

  • Active lifestyle and regular exercise
  • Moist heat may help. If any initial signs, warm water bath can be of some help.

Tests:

  • Electromyography (EMG) measures the muscle response to nervous stimulation.
  • Muscle biopsy
