Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is a condition of the bones in which they become thin and easily breakable. The bones mainly affected are the hip bone, spine, and wrist.
Symptoms:
- Loss of weight
- Bone fractures
Causes:
Not well understood but is a natural process of aging and menopause. Evaluation of osteoporosis:
Evaluation that is accepted to be the most accurate by NIH is by calculating the mineral content of the bone. The mineral content is tested by dual energy x-ray absorptometry (DEXA). A statistical score is calculated with the deviations from the average BMD values at various skeletal sites such as the hip, wrist, and spine. Prevention:
- It is preventable.
- Diet that is rich in calcium
- Vitamin D helps the body to absorb calcium
- Weight-bearing exercises are the best ways to prevent osteoporosis.
Treatment:
The main treatment is to prevent fractures and further loss of bone. Some hormone replacement therapies (HRT) are recommended for some women. However, there are consequences of HRT and should be discussed well with your doctor before starting it.
