Combination effect

Medicines are made up of one or more chemical components. Just as chemicals can combine when put together, even components do. This is the reason why two or more medicines taken together always have an effect on each other. This phenomenon is called interaction. It is very important to know which medicines interact with each other.

Types of interaction:

  • The medicines could have the same component: It result in a higher dose of the component than it was meant to be.
  • Antagonistic components: This results in a reduced effect in the action of the drugs.
  • New components whose interactions are not known may result in an unexpected effect. When combination is not known, it is better not taken together.

Note:

  • Not only can the prescription drugs cause interaction effect. Even herbs and other over the counter medicines can have effect. Even vitamin supplements can effect!
  • Always check the instruction sheet that comes with the medicine. Normally all the side effects and the instructions regarding taking of medicines is given.
  • Always tell your doctor and the pharmacist about all the medicines you are taking before starting a new medication.
  • Preferably take medicines of the same company. Normally they do not have overlapping components.
