Tissues

Cells of the same type joined together for a common purpose form a tissue.

Each cell has its own function. However, in our body many alike cells together form a group and work together to perform a specific function for the entire body. Such a group of cells is called a tissue.

Each type of tissue has its unique function. Let us consider each type of tissue one by one:

1. Epithelial tissue: This form of tissue is seen on the skin covering the entire body, covering of the respiratory tract and all other cavities, and also forms glands.

It has very important functions:

  • Protection - the skin
  • Absorption of food - the lining of the intestine
  • Filtration - kidneys
  • Excretion - kidneys
  • Secretion - glands
  • Sensory reception - skin

2. Connective tissue: It forms the supporting framework of our body.

It has the following types and corresponding functions:

  • Supports and cushions the body organs - areolar
  • Stores fat as reserve food - adipose
  • Offers tensile strength - ligament and the skin
  • Frame of the body - bone and cartilage
  • Body fluids - blood, lymph.

3. Muscular tissue: They capacitate the movement of the body.

They have the following functions:

  • Voluntary movement of the skeleton - muscles attached to bone
  • Involuntary movement of the heart - allows uninterrupted movement of the heart
  • Involuntary movement of the bowel muscles - for digesting food

4. Nerve tissue: They are made up of nerve cells. They wire the entire body and overlook coordination.

They have following functions:

  • Forms brain, spinal chord, and nerves
  • Take information from every part to the brain - central control
  • Transmits electrical impulses throughout the body - help to coordinate
  • Reacts to stimuli - reflex

5. Membranes: These are the most impressive of all tissues and in fact are a coordination of two types of tissues - the connective and the epithelial tissue.

These have very important and varied functions:

  • Forms the skin with glands - that protects the entire body by secreting sweat, oil, saliva
  • Forms the wet mucous membranes - for protection, filtering, absorption
  • Lines closed body cavities such as peritoneum to prevent friction
  • Lines bone joints - provide lubrication of the moving parts

Tissues are team workers too

Like cells work together to form tissues with specific functions, tissues of various functions coordinate together to form organs with specific functions such as the heart, stomach, lung, skin, etc.
