Braces
Orthodontic problems require braces. Orthodontic (malocclusion: bad bite) problems are: crooked teeth, crowded teeth, extra teeth. Teeth do not look good. Overbite (when upper jaw hangs over lower jaw) and underbite (when lower jaw is bigger than the upper jaw).
Age for consideration:
Braces are used only with permanent teeth. Any age can be just fine but the younger the age the better. Generally adolescent period is the best time to take action.
How does it work?
Braces have two main parts: brackets and wires. The brackets support the teeth while the wire offers strain. The braces need to be often adjusted to keep the strain constant. Sometimes other things like rubber bands or head gears are used to support the whole process.
Care:
- Proper food habits are essential. Sticky things are to be avoided.
- Brushing of teeth after every meal is recommended.
- Pain killers may be required to manage the pain that occurs after recent adjustment.
- Call a doctor immediately if there is bleeding or some parts of the braces scratch the inside of the mouth.
Facts:
- The period required to wear braces is not defined. It depends on the complexity of the problem and how easily the gums adjust to the shifting teeth. The usual period is two years.
- Proper maintenance and strict adherence to rules help a lot to speed up the process.
