Contraception

Contraception is a way to prevent pregnancy and STDs.

Types of contraception:

  • Abstinence: Not having intercourse. Almost perfectly effective against pregnancy and STDs. Accepted in almost every religion and cultures.
  • Condoms: Is a cap (mainly made of latex) that is worn over the penis. Comes for both males and females. Need to be correctly used for proper protection. It is a very effective way of preventing pregnancy, STDs or AIDS but there are chances of breaks.
  • Spermicide: These can be in form of jellies, creams, foams etc. Protects against pregnancy, offers some protection against STDs but nor AIDS. Apply in the vagina before sex, but can be messy.
  • Birth control pills: They prevent the release of the egg. Does not protect against STDs or AIDS. It is to be taken daily without fail. Needs proper prescription. Can have side effects.
  • Diaphragm: Like a cup and fits inside the woman's body. It protects against pregnancy but not STDs or AIDS. Can be messy but has least side effects. Can be used for several years.
  • Injections: Prevents pregnancy but not STDs or AIDS. It may have side effects.
  • Emergency contraception: It is used to prevent pregnacy in case of accidents (such as condom break, unprotected sex, forgot to take pills, rape etc.). Can have very severe side effects and should not be taken without medical supervision. Resort to this only in case of emergency.

Facts:

  • Abstinence may not be always effective. Especially when new experience, it may not work out as planned.
  • Keep your genitals very clean and wash hands very well before applying anything inside the vagina.
  • It is possible to get pregnant or get STDs even when you are having sex for the first time.
  • However smart you are, if there is a possibility of pregnancy, STDs, or AIDS, call your doctor immediately. Unwanted pregnancy and STDs have become a reason for great worry and concern because of the result of irresponsible behavior.
