Chemical agents
How you get exposed:
- While working with chemicals
- Working in a chemical factory
Results:
- There can be various effects.
- Can affect the reproductive health of both males and females.
- Can cause multiple chemical sensitivities.
What are multiple chemical sensitivities (MCS):
- It is a condition in which your immune system is activated due to chemical exposure and results in inflammation and tissues damage.
- First stage involves irritation to chemicals and may or may not have pain in the joints and muscles, headache, fatigue etc.
- In the second stage, tissue inflammation causing arthritis, colitis, dermatitis, etc.
- Stage three involves tissue and organ damage. Nerve damage, liver damage, kidney damage, or even autoimmune damage, can all be initiated. This condition is irreversible.
Note:
- MCS is very controversial condition. Most employers do not want to recognize it and avoid paying compensation. However, there is research going on to understand it better and legal considerations being implicated. It will take some time before any concrete decision can be taken or compensation given.
- he best way to avoid unwanted chemical exposure is by knowing the details of the effects any chemical can cause. Details about the chemicals are given in the material safety data sheet (MSDS) that comes with each chemical. There is a very good collection of all chemicals, their nature, and their effects, in Merck Index.
